Open Source and Prejudism
Over on Lucid Points, Tom has an insightful post that discusses the still continuing prejudisms against open source software. We use both commercial and open source software in our projects - choosing the most appropriate for the task. Open source has so many great advantages that in many cases open source should be considered first. For the following reasons I would shy away from a company unwilling to consider open source solutions:
- If they are unwilling to adapt to an open source application to meet your needs, then they will be unwilling to adapt anything else to best accomplish your goals.
- They are not interested in saving you money, so where else will you pay more than you need?
- They are concerned about their ability to handle a bug or two that may come up in an open source application. This person must not be confident in their ability to fix bugs. Bugs are found in ALL applications and are at least something you can fix if you need to in an open source solution
I also don't think it is always appropriate to use an open source application over a commercial. I like Microsoft office much better than open office. So we simply choose the right application for each job. Call us and we can tell you how to make open source software work for your business.
